Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed increase in the incidents of child abuse recently. KP Child Protection and Welfare Commission (KPCPWC) data shows that as 222 cases of sexual violence and abuse against children were reported from May 2011 to December 2017 across the province. However, experts believe that the actual number is much higher than that as many incidents previously went unreported.
The incidents of murder of Zainab in Kasur and then Asma in Mardan after sexual abuse and massive protests after these incidents served as a wake-up call for the government, civil society and judiciary to tackle the menace effectively.
Many alleged sexual abusers of children have been arrested since then. However, the alleged killer of four-year-old Asma is still at large.
