Three mln commercial connections should be brought into tax net

Islamabad: Veteran trade leader Jahangir Akhtar on Wednesday said all sections of society should cooperate with the government which is trying best to stabilize the economy and make country self-reliant. The business community should think about the country at this critical juncture and prefer paying taxes over giving bribes, he said. Speaking to traders at his hunger strike camp, Jahangir Akhtar said that there are thirty-one lakh commercial electricity connections in the country while only 310000 of them are filers. The government should make all those having commercial connection filers and impose a minimum of Rs850 per month as income tax. All the commercial electricity bills should have the NIC number of the shopkeeper and they should be given membership of their respective chamber of commerce. He said that such a move will increase the number of taxpayers by 2.8 million which is in line with the demand of IMF and World Bank who have asked Pakistan to boost the number of filers to 3.5 million. our correspondent

The trade leader said that bringing the users of commercial connections will also help the government raise around two billion and 38 crore rupees per month.
