Islamabad: Supreme Court (SC) acquitted Rafaqat Ali due to lack of evidence after 13 years as he was awarded life imprisonment in a murder case. A three members bench presided by Justice Sardar Tariq Masood heard the appeal filed against the verdict of High Court here on Monday. Court remarked that two co-accused have already been acquitted by trial court and declared that Rafaqat Ali cannot be sentenced on the evidence on the basis of which other two co-accused are acquitted. Applicant’s counsel Ayesha Tasneem argued that two co-accused have already been acquitted by the trial court as there is no eye witness of the incident. Rafaqat Ali was arrested in 2009 in murder case of Mirza Mubashir Baig. Trial court had awarded him death sentence and acquitted two co-accused. High Court then converted the death sentence into life imprisonment and main l accused had filed an appeal in the SC against the verdict of High Court. Online
