Journalists rights case: Why TV is not exercising powers regarding the basic rights of the journalists: IHC

Chief Justice (CJ) Islamabad High Court (IHC) Athar Minallah has remarked as to why TV is not exercising powers related to basic rights of the journalists.

The CJ IHC gave these remarks during the hearing of the case related to journalists rights Thursday.

Hamid Mir told the court it is laid down in PEMRA ordinance it can see all the matters including salaries of the journalists.

CJ IHC remarked we summon the reply from PEMRA on this matter first.

Deputy Attorney General (DAG) told the court the summary regarding appointment of chairman Press Council and chairman ITNE has been sent.

Hamid Mir told the court “ Being amicus curiae I am filing my brief with regard to media ownership. UNESCO says there should be no monopoly in media ownership. Laws in this regard are in place in Germany and France that viewership and readership beyond a limit should not go to any channel.

Afzal Butt, former president PFUJ told the court no law is in place in Pakistan regarding the jobs in electronic media. People are working on the same pay since ten years. People return to home after doing their duties at night and on the next day they are stopped from mounting the stairs. PEMRA can take the action too in all this matter. PEMRA is empowered in this respect.

The court directed Attorney General to obtain directives from the government on this matter and assist the court.

The court while summoning report from PEMRA adjourned the hearing of the case till March 08.
