The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the local government elections in Karachi for an indefinite time period. The decision has been made after a request from the Sindh government, for the third time, seeking postponement for three months of the LG polls in seven districts of Karachi.
Earlier, the LG elections were scheduled to be held on October 23. The decision to put off the polls in seven districts of Sindh capital was the third in recent weeks, and was taken at a special meeting of the ECP, which was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja.
The ECP will meet again after 15 days to set the elections’ date. The federal government, too, had refused to provide security for the purpose, which probably led to the decision.
