Mother language observes in Landi Kotal

In connection with International Mother Language Day, a walk was conducted here in Landi Kotal bazaar on Tuesday aimed to approve mother language as a medium of education in schools.
It is to be mentioned here that the Day was chosen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999 to commemorate the killing of four students in Dhaka on Feb 21, 1952.
Under the banner of Khyber Adabi Malgari,Landi Kotal chapter, local poets and writers participated in the awareness walk carried out from Bacha Khan Square to local press club.
Addressing on the occasion speakers including Dr Kaleem Shinwari, Dr Atif Parhar and others shed light on different aspects of the importance of mother language and said the government had ignored the importance of the mother tongue that had created a sense of deprivation among the speakers of various local languages.
Mother languages were the identity of communities and reflected the culture and traditions of the natives.
They urged the private educational institutions to implement the Pashto subject as compulsory one and stressed the local traders and shopkeepers to write their sign boards in their mother language.
They maintained that celebration of the language day was aimed to develop better understanding among different ethnic groups in the country.
The speakers said that the adoption of the mother languages as medium of instruction in schools would develop the local languages and would also help increase literacy rate in the country.
