PESHAWAR
In order to provide social security to vulnerable segments of the society, the provincial government on Tuesday launched the first-ever social security policy of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The launching ceremony of the policy was organized by the public policy and social protection reforms unit, the Sub-national Governance Programme (SNGP), the German Cooperation (GIZ), the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.
Government officials, representatives of civil society, media and others attended the launching ceremony.
Director General (DG) Sustainable Development Unit in the Planning and Development (P&D) department Adil Saeed Safi said that the recent natural and man-made calamities have increased the need for a comprehensive policy on social security in KP, adding that the social security policy will prove a milestone to provide a cover to people hit by poverty, inflation, gender disparity, and unemployment.
Mr Safi lauded the role of SNG Programme, GZ, ILO and Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in extending their outputs in formulating a social security policy for KP.
He said that necessary steps should be taken on war footing for implementing the policy in letter and spirit.
It is pertinent to mention here that the provincial government has initiated work on the social security policy after the advent of Covid-19 pandemic.
Speakers on this occasion said only strong cooperation between government and civil society representatives are needed of the hour to achieve the real objectives of the policy.
The government representatives said that the provincial government was committed to ensure the implementation of the policy and translate the vision of the policy in helping the targeted population.
The policy provides a broad vision and strategic direction that are effective and translated into effective programs and schemes to reach out vulnerable segments of the society and provide them social security under the guidance of the policy.
