Journalism dept students urged to use RTI law

Assistant Director of Communication Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Commission (KPIC) has urged students of Journalism to use the RTI Act for investigative journalism and ensure social wellbeing. He said that the law should be utilized for preventing corruption and nepotism in public sectors of the province.
During an awareness session organized for students of Journalism at University of Peshawar (UoP) on Tuesday, Syed Saadat Jahan emphasized the importance of the law as a tool for social change and development in Newly Merged Areas (NMAs). He welcomed the efforts of citizens to get information from public institutions and provide all possible facilities.
The awareness session was attended by a large number of students including faculty members. Syed Saadat Jahan addressed the participants and said that RTI exposes abuse of power and injustice in public affairs.
“As a student of journalism, it is important for you to know the law of access to information,” he said and added that the law will assist you to reach facts and figures for investigative journalism.
Utilise RTI law and prevent corruption and nepotism in government sectors, he said.
Lecturer Ali Imran thanked the Information Commission for organizing the session and said that a seminar on RTI will be organized for all the faculty members and students of the university.
It should be noted that the above awareness session was organized by the KPIC in collaboration with the Governance and Public Policy Project for Merged Districts.
