The recent suspension and subsequent restoration of the Sehat Card Plus program in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) by the State Life Insurance Corporation (SLIC) has been a rollercoaster of uncertainty for the people of the province. This vital healthcare initiative, initially launched by the PTI government in 2016, has served as a lifeline for millions of families in KP, offering them access to essential medical services.
The program, which had temporarily ground to a halt due to non-payment of dues by the provincial government, left countless residents of KP in a state of anxiety and despair. Free healthcare services have become an absolute necessity, especially when the majority of the population struggles to afford medical treatment in government and private hospitals.
The decision to suspend the Sehat Card Plus program was undoubtedly a challenging one for SLIC, but it served as a wake-up call to authorities, demanding immediate action. Thankfully, after assurances of clearing all unpaid amounts and a formal request from the Advisor to the Chief Minister for Health KP, the SLIC decided to restore the program.
The importance of this program cannot be overstated. Over 2.2 million patients have benefited from free health services at a substantial cost of Rs51 billion. The Sehat Card has successfully registered over 9.78 million families across the country, providing them with access to 1,100 hospitals, including 193 in KP. These statistics are a testament to the program’s significance and its ability to alleviate the healthcare burden on the population.
However, the challenges faced by the KP government in maintaining this program have been exacerbated by financial difficulties and the interim setup that has been in place since January 2023. The commitment to this initiative, launched by the previous government, has been mired in uncertainty, leading to delays in payments for medical treatments and periodic interruptions in services.
It is crucial for all stakeholders, including the federal and provincial governments, SLIC and healthcare facilities to work together to ensure the uninterrupted provision of healthcare services to the people of KP. The Sehat Card Plus program should not be subjected to political fluctuations, as it directly impacts the well-being of millions of citizens.
The restoration of the Sehat Card Plus program is a positive step towards ensuring that the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continue to receive the healthcare they deserve. However, it serves as a reminder of the program’s vulnerability and the need for a long-term, sustainable solution to secure the health and well-being of the province’s residents.
