TTP involved in extortion in Peshawar: report

The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was found to be involved in a number of cases of extortion in the provincial capital and other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), said a report issued here on Sunday.
According to the report, police in coordination with other law enforcement agencies have successfully busted number cases of extortions, adding that half of the cases have been solved and suspects were arrested.
It said that 73 cases of extortion were registered in the province while 41 of the registered cases of extortion were traced and 224 suspects of the registered cases were identified and 100 suspects have been arrested.
As per details, during the ongoing year, in Peshawar region more than 26 cases of extortions were registered of which nine cases were traced by the police whereas 17 registered cases could not be traced. Similarly, the report said that so far 10 cases of extortion registered in Khyber district and six cases in Swat could not be traced. Six cases of extortion reported from Hangu, three each from Nowshera and Dera Ismail Khan.
Cases have been registered on which the investigation is ongoing, while according to the police, officials of various banned organizations including TTP have been found involved in extortion calls in Peshawar region.
Police officials said that a comprehensive investigation is underway to make Peshawar free from the extortion racket and ensure law and order situation in the provincial capital.
According to an estimate, many of the influential and rich people of the province have left the province and settled in other cities due to the fear of extortion.
