Madrid, Spain: New and innovative ways were discussed for treatment of cancer at ESMO 2023 conference here. Noted neurophysician of the country and President of Epilepsy Foundation Pakistan Dr Fowzia Siddiqui attended the moot to shed light on new cancer treatments for brain tumors. She talked about the use of licorice with aloe to reduce skin damage during chemo therapy, at the neuro oncology session of the conference. Her discussion focused on the role of neurophysiology in brain tumor resection, especially in those with epilepsy, and how the brain has a protective shield over it called the blood brain barrier which prevents chemicals from entering the brain. She said this is why it is difficult to get anti-cancer drugs (chemotherapy) to get to brain tumors. For this ultrasound waves are used to make the barrier more permeable, making it easier for chemo to enter the brain.
She said further research and collaboration is under way in many countries including Pakistan.
