KARACHI: Former finance minister Miftah Ismail on Tuesday stressed the need for referendum on the local government. Addressing the seminar in Karachi, “The divisions have been given power. There is a need to give power to the districts.” Ismail underscored the role of the citizens, saying, “The citizens give taxes and have to follow the rules set by the government.” “The responsibility also lies on the government to fulfil, which is also known as service delivery,” he said. Ismail appreciated the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) for presenting the bill that can lead to service delivery. “The service delivery is not being done in the big cities and small villages,” he added. He went on to say the population in countries like Romania and the Netherlands was less than that in Karachi. Earlier, it was reported that the MQM-P senior leader Dr Farooq Sattar had verified the media reports that he has offered PML-N leader Miftah Ismail to join his party. DNA
