Hardik Pandya, vice-captain of India’s T20 World Cup winning team, would seem the natural successor to the now-retired Rohit Sharma. However, Hardik’s past history of injuries – he has featured in just 54 of India’s 122 ODIs since January 2018 – and workload management with an eye on next year’s Champions Trophy could force a rethink. This brings Suryakumar Yadav, among the first names on the sheet in India’s first-choice T20I XI, into the fray. He captained a second-string India squad to a 4-1 series win over Australia last November, followed by a 1-1 series scoreline in South Africa.
