DERA ISMAIL KHAN
The Water and Sanitation Services Company (WSSC) Dera Ismail Khan has finalized an extensive sanitation plan to manage cleanliness and public health during the Eid-ul Azha festival, to be observed on June 7, 2025.
The sanitation campaign will run from June 5 to June 11, under the title of “Sanitation Week,” with focused operations during the three key Eid days — June 7 to 9. The plan outlines comprehensive arrangements for animal waste collection, temporary dumping, street cleaning, public awareness, and emergency response, the official said, while talking to APP.
A proper market review was conducted before the plan was finalized.. The district administration will also be approached for logistical and financial support, the official added.
WSSC DI Khan has completed a detailed assessment of areas expected to generate high volumes of waste, such as residential zones, mosques, markets, and public places. Arrangements have been made to ensure the availability of sanitation workers, waste collection vehicles, containers, cleaning tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE), the official said.
A city-wide waste collection schedule has been prepared to meet the increased demand during Eid. Temporary collection points will be established at crowded locations to facilitate timely disposal. Waste from these points will be transferred to a primary dumping site and then to the main dumping ground, where pits have been excavated in advance, the official stated.
To promote responsible waste disposal, WSSC will distribute biodegradable bags of various sizes to households. Informational brochures and pamphlets will also be provided to raise awareness about proper waste segregation practices, the official said.
Additional resources, including waste bins, cleaning supplies, disinfectants, and collection vehicles, have been arranged. Rented machinery and temporary labor will also be engaged as needed to ensure uninterrupted operations throughout the sanitation week, the official added.
WSSC will deploy extra street sweeping teams and private labor to clean roads and public spaces, with particular attention to animal slaughtering sites. Regular sweeping will take place during and after Eid to prevent the spread of disease. Lime powder will be used to disinfect areas around containers and public roads, the official said.
Debris such as animal waste and food remains will be removed promptly. Coordination with local authorities and community volunteers will help maintain cleanliness across all zones, the official stated.
Awareness campaigns will be conducted through newspapers, radio, social media, and banners placed across the city to inform the public about cleanliness protocols during Eid. WSSC will also collaborate with local organizations, religious leaders, and volunteers to encourage the proper use of biodegradable bags, support sanitation workers, and discourage false complaints, the official added.
Monitoring teams will carry out inspections throughout the sanitation campaign to ensure the plan is followed. Waste collection data will be recorded and analyzed to improve future services. Community feedback will also be gathered to evaluate the performance and address any shortcomings, the official said.
To manage emergencies, seven sanitary workers with four pickup vehicles will be kept on standby. In addition, control rooms have been established at the WSSC Head Office and the Zonal Office near Imamia Gate. A dedicated social media team will remain active throughout the week to respond to public complaints and ensure swift redressal, the official stated.
WSSC DI Khan’s proactive approach aims to ensure public health, environmental hygiene, and a pleasant atmosphere for citizens during Eid ul Azha through this well-coordinated sanitation effort, the official concluded.
