Excise minister chairs regulatory committee meeting on medicinal cannabis

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Syed Fakhar Jehan on Thursday chaired the second meeting of the Medicinal Plant “Cannabis” Regulatory Committee, a handout said.
The forum focused on strengthening the regulatory framework for medicinal, research-based, and other beneficial uses of Cannabis under rules approved by the Provincial Cabinet.
Provincial Minister for Health Khaleeq-ur-Rehman, Minister for Law Aftab Alam, Secretary Excise Khalid Ilyas, Director General Excise Abdul Haleem Khan, and senior officials from Agriculture, Health, Law, and other relevant departments attended the meeting. Experts including Dr. Fazal Nasir, Chairman of the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Peshawar, Dr. Hira Fazal of PCSIR Laboratories, and subject specialist Dr. Sarwar Ismail also participated.
During the meeting, committee members were briefed on licensing procedures and departmental responsibilities under the Excise Department’s mandate. Ministers, experts, and officials shared suggestions to streamline and strengthen regulatory mechanisms.
Syed Fakhar Jehan directed the formation of a subcommittee, led by the Director General Excise and comprising officers from all relevant departments, to prepare necessary documentation on the issuance of licenses for the medicinal plant “Hemp” for Cabinet approval.
The subcommittee will complete its work and submit detailed recommendations, with the next committee meeting scheduled in fifteen days.
