The financial crisis at the University of Peshawar (UoP) has deepened, with the teaching community expressing strong concern over delays in the payment of salaries and pensions to faculty members and retired employees. In a statement, Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) said that teachers were continuing their academic, research and administrative duties as usual, but were being deprived of timely salaries and pension payments, causing severe financial hardship for staff and pensioners who depend solely on these incomes.
The association said that during the current financial year, salaries for nearly three months were delayed due to insufficient funds, creating uncertainty and frustration among faculty members and raising concerns over the possible departure of experienced teachers from the institution.
The association stated that a grant request of Rs619 million had been submitted by the university to the provincial government, but the proposal was still pending approval in relevant offices.
The association warned that the ongoing financial constraints were affecting academic, administrative and research activities at the university and could pose a serious threat to the future of higher education in the province.
PUTA urged the provincial government to immediately release funds to clear all outstanding dues of teachers and pensioners and take urgent steps to stabilise the university’s financial situation.
