Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi on Saturday inaugurated the newly developed Abbottabad Park, a major public amenity aimed at providing citizens with recreational, healthy and environmentally sustainable spaces.
The Chief Minister also planted a tree at the park as part of the plantation initiative being undertaken at the facility. Minister for Local Government, Elections and Rural Development Meena Khan Afridi accompanied him. Secretary Local Government, Elections and Rural Development Zafarul Islam Khan was also present on the occasion.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi said that the provincial government was committed to developing sustainable, environmentally responsible and people-centred cities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He said that the provision of quality public spaces, the improvement of the urban environment, and the expansion of green areas were important components of the government’s vision for better cities.
The chief minister appreciated the efforts behind the development of Abbottabad Park and said that such facilities would provide families, children and young people with opportunities for recreation, physical activity and healthy social interaction.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister LGE&RDD Meena Khan Afridi said that dozens of development projects have been launched that would change the urban landscape of the province.
“A clean and green Pakhtunkhwa is the vision Imran Khan, a dream the provincial government is materializing,” he said.
Spread over 702 kanals, Abbottabad Park has been developed at a total cost of Rs1.47 billion.
The park features a wide range of recreational and public facilities, including 30 gazebos, six walking tracks, a 365-metre-long zip line, a cricket ground and a dedicated children’s play area.
The park also includes a mosque with separate facilities for men and women, while three car parking areas with a combined capacity of around 250 vehicles have been provided for visitors.
A major focus of the project is environmental sustainability. A total of 13,000 trees are planned for plantation at the park, of which around 7,000 have already been planted.
Notably, not a single tree was felled during the construction of the park, reflecting the project’s emphasis on preserving the existing natural environment while expanding the city’s green space.
The park is expected to benefit approximately 1.9 million people, providing residents and visitors to Abbottabad with a dedicated space for recreation, exercise, family activities and outdoor engagement.
The inauguration marks an important addition to Abbottabad’s public infrastructure and is expected to contribute to the city’s recreational, environmental and tourism potential.
