Free, fair local govt elections in Punjab demanded

Jamaat-e-Islami Deputy Emir Liaqat Baloch has demanded the provincial election commission hold free and fair local government elections in Punjab.
The demand was made during a meeting with Punjab Election Commissioner Ghulam Israr Khan at latter’s office on Thursday.
Liaqat Baloch said it was responsibility of the ECP to conduct elections according to the schedule and not to be the partner of the governments in their unconstitutional act. He said the provincial governments were using delaying tactics in conducting the local bodies’ polls, depriving the masses from their basic rights.
Pakistan based leader of US Democratic Party Tahir Javed and Professor Nasir Iqbal (a Chicago based Imam) also called on JI leader here at Mansoora. Baloch said the Pakistani community in America should actively play their role in highlighting human rights violations in Indian held Kashmir.
Meanwhile, JI Deputy Emir Dr Farid Paracha expressed concern over the performance of disaster management departments during the natural disasters in different parts of the country.
He said dozens lost their lives in the KP during the recent torrential rains but the provincial governments and departments responsible for providing relief to the masses in disasters remained absent from the scene.
Similarly, he said that roads, bus stops and residential and commercial areas inundated in water even after small rain in Lahore but the administration was in a deep slumber.
Liaqat Baloch and Dr Paracha expressed condolence with the family of Wing Commander Nauman Akram Shaheed and said the late officer was the proud of the nation.
