The India Women’s Hockey Team’s goal of securing its maiden Olympic medal in the final after facing a major loss as the team lost 3-4 to Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics in the bronze medal play-off on Friday.
Great Britain triumphed bronze in the women’s hockey at Tokyo Olympics 2020 with a thrilling 4-3 victory against India.
The 2016 gold medallists took an early 2-0 lead but fell 3-2 down in the third quarter.
They came back to draw level before Grace Balsdon struck the winning goal after a succession of penalty corners.
The victory takes Great Britain straight to a row with the team having three bronze medals now after 2012.
The winning team celebrated their spectacular win. India’s women, competing for a medal for the first time, were unable to succeed following their men’s team, who won bronze on Thursday to end a 41-year delay for a medal.
GB, who claimed gold following a dramatic penalty shootout victory against the Netherlands five years ago, were deserved winners in Yashio.
Elena Rayer’s deflected cut-back opened the scoring for GB before Sarah Robertson’s excellent reverse-stick strike made it 2-0 after a smart save from goalkeeper Maddie Hinch at the other end.
However, despite the loss, the Indian hockey team won the hearts of a billion and more for their heart and hard work.
Indian players are in tears on the turf. Several celebrities, political leaders and fans hailed the fantastic effort from India.
On the other hand, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, took to his Twitter to praise the great performance of his Women’s Hockey Team at the Olympics.
“We will always remember the great performance of our Women’s Hockey Team at #Tokyo2020. They gave their best throughout. Each and every member of the team is blessed with remarkable courage, skill and resilience. India is proud of this outstanding team.”
“We narrowly missed a medal in Women’s Hockey but this team reflects the spirit of New India- where we give our best and scale new frontiers. More importantly, their success at #Tokyo2020 will motivate young daughters of India to take up Hockey and excel in it. Proud of this team,” he tweeted.
