NHA has turned into corrupt institution: SC

Supreme Court (SC) while rejecting NHA report on poor condition of NA-25 Balochistan High Way has sought detailed report from NHA on the repairs of high ways and road accidents which have taken place in the country.
A 3-member bench of SC presided over by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed took up the case for hearing Wednesday.

CJP inquired from member planning Shahid Ahsan where do the funds provided to National High Way Authority (NHA) go. NHA is not doing quality work on any road. Corruption is at peak in NHA. NHA roads are damaged in rain water. People are dying on the roads due to negligence of NHA. The blood of those who have been killed in road incident is at the hands of NHA. NHA has been turned into a corrupt institution. Petrol pumps, hotels and shops have been built on lease on high way land. There are no trees along side high way. The contractors are all set to mint money in NHA. NHA receives too much money but to whose pocket the money goes, it is not known.

According to 2018 report, 12894 road accidents occurred and 5932 people died.

Justice Mian Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel remarked the report is there that 36000 people have died in road accidents in the current year.

Member Admn Planning NHA Shahid Ehsan told the court the roads condition will improve by the end of this year.

The court while rejecting the NHA report on the dilapidated condition of Balochistan High way has called detailed report from NHA regarding repairs of high ways and road accidents which have taken place so fare all over the country.

The hearing of the case was adjourned for indefinite period.
