A review meeting of Senate special committee on Tobacco was held under the chair of Convener Committee Senator Kalsoom Perveen at Parliament House on Tuesday.
The issues of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Pakistan Tobacco Board, and reduction of tax of Multi-national companies were come under discussion. The committee expressed reservations over FBR tax system. The committee while expressing resentment over the absence of FBR chairman directed him to ensure his presence in the next meeting.
The committee also sought details regarding hiring of FBR officials ‘relatives in multi-national companies within a week. The committee Chairman warned for strict action against those who violated the merit.
Senator Muhammad Azam Khan Swati informed the meeting that the FBR tax system was introduced by the previous government. He said he rejects that system, adding this system doesn’t benefit the government.
Chairperson Kalsoom Perveen while seeking details of those employees have been hired using influence asked FBR officials to brief the committee regarding causes of reduction in the tax.
Senator Dilwar Khan raised objection that the government imposed tax on local Tabacco industry whereas imposed only 11 per cent duty on foreign companies.
