The World Health Organization has warned that, the worst could be still to come in the Covid-19 pandemic even after six months on from when the outbreak began. WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the virus would infect many more people if governments did not start to implement the right policies.<\/p>\n
More than 10 million cases have been recorded worldwide since coronavirus emerged in China late last year. The number of patients who died is now above 500,000. Half the world’s cases have been in the US and Europe. The virus is also affecting South Asia and Africa, where it is not expected to peak until the end of July.<\/p>\n
Dr Tedros told a virtual briefing on Monday: “We all want this to be over. We all want to get on with our lives. But the hard reality is this is not even close to being over. Although many countries have made some progress, globally the pandemic is actually speeding up.”<\/p>\n
The World Health Organization says 60 percent of the world\u2019s 10 million coronavirus cases since December came in the month of June \u2013 a sign that the pandemic is getting worse and not slowing down.<\/p>\n
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday that more than 160,000 new cases are reported every day.<\/p>\n
He said countries must take what he calls a \u201ccomprehensive approach\u201d in battling the virus.<\/p>\n
“Find, isolate, test and care for every case; trace and quarantine every contact; equip and train health workers; and educate and empower communities to protect themselves and others,\u201d Tedros said.<\/p>\n
He added that those countries taking a \u201cfragmented approach\u201d have a \u201clong, hard road ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNot testing alone. Not physical distancing alone. Not contact tracing alone. Not masks alone. Do it all,\u201d Tedros said. He said one of the lessons learned in the past six months is that \u201cit\u2019s never too late \u2026 no matter what situation a country is in, it can be turned around.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
