\nParliamentary leaders in the NA and Senate, except PPP have unanimously agreed for two years extension in the military courts. The decision is linked with a road map and timeline for the courts and a parliamentary committee of the two houses will monitor it.
\nThis was announced by Ishaq Dar alongwith other parliamentary leaders of different political parties while talking to media after a meeting chaired by Speaker at the PM House on Tuesday.
\nDar said the PPP did not attend the meeting and hoped that an APC convened by the opposition party on 4th March would extend the support for extension in the tenure of military courts.
\nHe said it has been decided to convene meetings of the Senate on 3rd March and of the NA on 6th March where amendment in Pakistan army Act and military courts extension would be presented. He said all the parliamentary groups have fully supported the extension of military courts and hoped that this spirit would also be shown by the PPP.
\nShah Mahmood Qureshi said every party presented its point of view and said that all parties including PPP agreed that the situation exist today which threatens integrity and security of Pakistan and there is need for extension of military courts.
\nHe said the amendments would be effective from 7th January so that there was no legal lacuna. By that time anti terrorism courts will have been strengthened and all cases pending will be transferred to ATCs
\nQureshi said there would be a parliamentary oversight which will meet every month or once in two months to review implementation. The time line implementation plan will be decided and every parliamentary leader will sign it, to ensure that govt sticks to the time and there was no need for another extension.
\nHe said it was decided that the extension would be for two years and not 3 years. He said there is consensus that there should be no politics in national interests and in fighting terrorism.
\nSheikh Rashid Ahmad said he has been supporting military courts and hoped that reservations of any one will be removed when the bill is presented in the parliament.
\nSahibzada Tariqullah of JI , Ghulam Bilour of ANP and Aftab Sherpao supported the extension and said it augurs well for eliminating terrorism. The JI and JUI(F) representatives however stressed that religion should not be linked with terrorism.
\nReplying to questions, Senator Ishaq Dar said the government is open to any good amendment from the opposition. He said final wording in the law will be with consensus.
