\nIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the Israel-Lebanon border on Tuesday, a day after a military escalation in the region.
\nThe Israeli prime minister\u2019s office said he held a security assessment and briefing with Israel Defense Forces (IDF) chief of staff Aviv Kohavi and other senior officials at the military\u2019s Northern Command Headquarters.
\nThe tour took place a day after Israel said an armed \u201cterrorist squad\u201d attempted to infiltrate into Israel and had fled back to Lebanon after Israeli troops opened fire. Israel also fired artillery into southern Lebanon.
\n\u201cEverything happening now is the result of the effort by Iran and its Lebanese proxies to entrench militarily in our region,\u201d Netanyahu said during his tour. He also accused Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah of \u201cserving the Iranian interest at Lebanon\u2019s expense.\u201d
\n\u201cI do not suggest that anybody try the IDF or the State of Israel. We are determined to defend ourselves,\u201d he warned, adding that the military is \u201cwell prepared for every possible scenario.\u201d
\nHe warned that Israel will continue to \u201ctake action\u201d to thwart Iran\u2019s military presence in the region. \u201cWe will do whatever is necessary to defend ourselves and I suggest that Hezbollah consider this simple fact,\u201d he said.
\nHezbollah denied any involvement in Monday\u2019s incident, saying Israel\u2019s charges on thwarting an infiltration were \u201ccompletely false.\u201d
\nOn his Twitter account, Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab condemned Israel saying that \u201cIsrael has once again violated Lebanon\u2019s sovereignty… in a dangerous military escalation.\u201d
\nThe violence was the heaviest fighting along the volatile border in nearly a year.
