\nFederal Law Minister Zahid Hamid said the \u201cIndian claim\u201d that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is about terrorism is a false narrative and a \u201cdesperate attempt\u201d to divert the attention of the international community from grave human rights violations being committed in the state.
\nCalling for the Council\u2019s intervention in Kashmir, asserting that the \u201chuman rights and fundamental freedoms of innocent Kashmiris are being trampled upon, the minister denied that there was a terrorism problem in Kashmir and claimed that Islamabad\u2019s involvement was only in providing \u201cpolitical, moral and diplomatic support\u201d.
\nHe informed the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Wednesday urging it to act \u201cbefore it is too late\u201d.
\n\u201cThe Indian claim that the deteriorating human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir is an internal affair of India is factually incorrect, legally untenable and in violation of the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution,\u201d Zahid Hamid, Federal Minister for Law and Justice of Pakistan said speaking at the high-level segment of the ongoing 34th HRC session.
\n\u201cEqually false is the Indian narrative that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is about terrorism.
\n\u201cThis is a patently desperate attempt to divert the attention of the international community from the grave human rights violations being committed by Indian forces,\u201d Hamid added.
\nReferring to India as an \u201coccupying power\u201d, the Minister said that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir about \u201cthe tragedy of a people being brutalised… so that they can give up their just struggle for the inherent right to self-determination\u201d.
\nHe added that Pakistan is a \u201crecognised party to this internationally-recognised issue\u201d under the UN resolutions. This is contrary to the Indian government\u2019s stand that the J&K issue is an internal matter of the country and that Pakistan has \u201cno locus standi\u201d in the matter.
\nThe Pakistani government, he added, will continue to extend the \u201cunflinching political, moral and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people\u201d.
\nPakistan also called on all the mechanisms of the council and the Indian community to \u201cremain seized of the grave and systematic violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Jammu and Kashmir\u201d and urged India to end its \u201coppression\u201d.
\nThe right to self-determination is an inalienable right of the Kashmiri people, and the issue is pending final settlement through a free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices as enunciated in numerous resolutions of the UNSC, Hamid said.
\nPakistan said that it supports the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stand that a UN human rights team should visit J&K to \u201cindependently and impartially investigate the grave human rights violations being perpetrated by Indian forces\u201d.
\nHowever, the UN human rights chief Zeid Ra\u2019ad Al-Hussein had asked for access to visit both Jammu and Kashmir as well as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the 33rd session of the UNHRC held in September 2016.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
