\nPolice shot dead an African-American man in the US capital Washington, the force said, in the latest of a slew of police killings of black men and women that has sparked nationwide uproar.
\nThe man, said to be aged 18, was shot in the southeast of the city as officers were following up on a tip about guns allegedly stashed in a vehicle.
\n\u201cWhen they approached the vehicle, some of the folks of the vehicle fled on foot. One of the officers discharged their firearm,\u201d Washington police chief Peter Newsham told a news conference.
\n\u201cWe have what we believe to be an adult male that was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.\u201d
\nHe said officers recovered two guns from what he described as the \u201cscene of the crime.\u201d
\nThe shooting came after months of protests against police brutality across the country, and just two days after officers in Los Angeles shot dead an African-American man who was riding his bike when police tried to stop him.
\nA local council member Trayon White told media that he had spoken with the mother of the man killed in Washington.
\n\u201cWe\u2019ve seen this narrative too many times in America, and now it\u2019s hitting home,\u201d he said. \u201cI talked to his mom and we want to figure out what\u2019s on the body camera footage, to figure out if he was running away why was he shot.\u201d
\n\u201cSome people say he was shot in the front, some people say he was shot in the back,\u201d White, who identified the man as African American, told media.
\nMarkus Batchelor, also a local council representative, told media the young man \u201cjust celebrated his 18th birthday. It\u2019s tragic.\u201d
\n\u201cWe don\u2019t know a lot about the situation. But, in my mind, there are very few reasons for a 17-year-old or 18-year-old young boy to be killed in our city, especially if this man was unarmed or if he was fleeing.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
