HONG KONG: Shares in China\u2019s biggest contract chip manufacturer SMIC sank by over 23 percent on Monday, after the US government said it may block American companies from providing goods and services to the firm. SMIC\u2019s Hong Kong-listed shares nosedived 23.89 percent to HK$18, while its recently listed Shanghai shares fell over 11 percent to 58.8 yuan. The US Department of Defense is reportedly assessing whether to add SMIC to the Commerce Department\u2019s so-called Entity List. According to Wall Street Journal sources, the department is considering whether the chip maker aids China\u2019s military and defense apparatus.
