PESHAWAR: Announcing to move the Supreme Court of Pakistan on August 22 over Panama PapersLeaks, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Senator Sirajul Haq on Wednesday asked for legislation to award 25 years imprisonment to those involved in corruption.
\n\u201cWe want accountability of everyone, including the prime minister. Our drive is not against democracy but all those involved in corruption,\u201d he told reporters at Al Markaz-e-Islami here. He said action should also be taken against all those politicians who have written off loans in the past.
\n\u201cBillions of rupees have been looted by the politicians and others through corrupt practices in the past. They should be arrested and taken to task. The billions of rupees looted and stashed in Swiss banks and other countries should be brought back to the country,\u201d said the head of JI, which has launched a campaign against corruption for the last few weeks.
\nThe party also carried out a train march recently to create awareness among the people about the menace of corruption. The Jamaat-e-Islami chief criticised the government, saying it was not serious about the issue of Panama Papers leaks and offshore companies.
\n\u201cWe are not singling out the prime minister or anyone else. We want anyone involved in corruption should be punished and the looted money should be spent on the welfare of the people,\u201d Sirajul Haq maintained.
\nHe demanded an open trial in the corruption cases so the public could know about the day-to-day progress. Sirajul Haq, whose party is a coalition partner in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, said there were no allegations of corruption against any JI leader or minister. He also denounced the VIP culture, saying it should end as well.
\n\u201cWe are submitting applications for amendments to the National Accountability Bureau laws for accelerated and effective actions against the corrupt,\u201d he maintained. He suggested that those proven guilty should be awarded 25 years imprisonment with all his properties confiscated.
\nThe Jamaat-e-Islami head said his party had raised voice against corruption within and outside the parliament. \u201cBillions of rupees are being looted everyday by those who have graduated from universities. We want an end to corruption with strict punishments for those involved so the public money is spent on the welfare of the people,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
