\nUN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed has said that a year of \u201cimmense challenges\u201d has reversed progress on meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
\nAddressing the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development\u202f(HLPF), Amina Mohammed attributed the Covid-19 pandemic to \u201ca reversal of SDG progress in some areas, and delayed action on many of the major transitions required to meet our 2030 goals\u201d.
\nShe said the pandemic has had a \u201cdeeply negative impact\u201d on health and well-being; employment, businesses, incomes, education; and human rights, with \u201ca particularly damaging effect on women and girls\u201d.
\nMs. Mohammed gave the examples of digital learning, which could to transform education more broadly, along with building on critical fiscal support many countries had provided to their economy, jobs and people. \u201cGovernments should now consider whether some of these measures can be integrated into comprehensive social protection systems\u201d, said the UN official.
\nMs. Mohammed said that stimulus packages and Special Drawing Rights for foreign exchange reserves, can be leveraged to advance gender equality, boost investment in education, health and social protection.
\nThey could also be used to accelerate climate change mitigation and generate decent jobs. But there can be no pandemic recovery without \u201cinternational solidarity and cooperation\u201d, including through climate finance and financing for development, she added.
\n\u201cWe must support these countries in their response to the Covid-19 pandemic and in recovering better to accelerate SDG implementation\u201d, she underscored.
\nWhile this applies \u201cfirst and foremost\u201d to ensuring universal access to lifesaving vaccines, she stressed that it also extends to delivering \u201ca financial lifeline\u201d for those States faced with major debt pressures as well as for mobilizing resources, technology, know-how and partnerships to \u201cfacilitate economic transformation\u201d.
\nThe UN development system is committed to \u201cfully supporting this endeavour\u201d, she said. Moreover, following three years of reforms, they are \u201cprimed to deliver the transformative support\u201d that Governments demand to accelerate SDG implementation.
\n\u201cWith political leadership, solidarity and unity of purpose, we can end the pandemic, secure improvements in people\u2019s lives between now and 2030, and keep the promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We must not drop our collective ambition when the needs have never been greater\u201d, she concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
