PESHAWAR: In a major development towards change, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has implemented Police Ordinance 2016 in letter and spirit in order to remove political influence and powers to be handed over to Inspector General of Police to run the official affairs.
\nSSP Operation Abbas Majeed Marwat told this scribe that 75 amendments have been made in Police Act 2002 to make it more effective in terms of removing political influence as it is believed that police works under the ruling political parties.
\nHe added that after the passage of Police Act 2016, merit would be ensured and political dominance would be removed as all administrative powers have been devolved to Inspector General of Police (IGP).
\nThe SSP maintained that police would be answerable to public representatives at district council level regarding maintaining peace and provision of safety to the citizens.
\nMr Marwat told that public safety committees have been constituted for readdressal of public complaints against police and final decisions in such cases would be taken by IGP.
\nHe said that Dispute Resolution Committees and Public Liaison Councils initiated by IGP Nasir Durrani were greatly appreciated by general public as number of disputes were resolved peacefully.
\n“Appointment, posting and transfers of constables to Additional Inspector General across the province would be given by IGP as per rules of the Police Act 2016” Abbas Majeed Marwat said.
\nIt is mandatory under the Act for public representatives to submit their reports regarding performance of police in their respective areas to IGP.
\nHe further said that Passage of Police Act 2016 is widely welcomed by people across the province as they are of the view that gap between police and citizens would be bridged and misconceptions about Thana culture would also be removed.
\nSSP briefly highlighted performance of police and claimed that law and order situation has been improved after sacrifices rendered by policemen for the sake of soil.
\nHe also said that terrorism activities have been reduced as compared to previous years and 9614 illegal afghan nationals have been arrested, adding that ring leaders of kidnapping and extortion have been arrested.
\nHe also informed that afghan nationals were involved in extortion in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and operations were continued against them to break their network.
\n“Target killings, street crimes have been reduced as strict actions being taken by police force across the province. Negotiation are being made with high-ups in Afghanistan for provision of calls tracking record as we have proof evidences that extortion threats are hurled from Afghanistan,” SSP Abbas Majeed Marwat said.
