\nFormer president Asif Ali Zardari said Monday PPP\u2019s own shortcomings were responsible for its defeat in Punjab elections after the party lost Lahore\u2019s NA-133 constituency to PML-N.
\nSpeaking at a ceremony in honour of party workers\u2019 at Bilawal House, Lahore, the former president said that if the turnout had been higher in Sunday\u2019s by-election, \u201cPPP would have had 50,000 votes.\u201d
\n\u201cThe world wants to break Pakistan,\u201d Zardari said, assuring the workers that PPP will fight against everybody for the sake of the country.
\nThe PPP leader claimed that \u201cthere is no place in Pakistan where you will not find a Bhuttoist or a PPP supporter.\u201d
\nShedding light on the \u201csacrifices\u201d he has made, Zardari recalled that was imprisoned during the most difficult times of PPP.
\n\u201cWe want to make Pakistan a successful country for generations to come,\u201d he said, adding that a person who is not ready to breathe his last in Pakistan does not have a stake in the decision of the country.
\nThe former president said that he still has strategies in his mind that can still make the country successful.
\n\u201cWe belong to this land and we will die here,\u201d he reiterated.
\nOn Sunday, preliminary results showed Malik defeated PPP opponent Aslam Gill by a margin of 14,498 votes, according to the unofficial results, securing 46,811 votes, versus Gill\u2019s 32,313.
\nPPP President Asif Ali Zardari congratulated workers over the party\u2019s \u201csplendid results\u201d.
\n\u201cThe efforts put in by Peoples Party Central Punjab\u2019s leadership, its team, and workers have borne fruit,\u201d the PPP quoted Zardari as saying.
\nZardari had congratulated PPP Central Punjab President Raja Pervez Ashraf.
\n\u201cThe Lahore by-poll has proved to be a turning point for Peoples Party,\u201d Zardari had said.
