\nIn Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) , in blatant violation of privacy norms, the Indian authorities have decided to install high-resolution cameras with facial recognition technology (FRT) in Srinagar.
\nThe need for facial recognition technology (FRT), a form of mass surveillance, has been raised in the name of strengthening the security grid in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The fact is about 300 CCTV cameras have already been installed across Srinagar city.
\n\u201cThere is a proposal of installing FRT in the city,\u201d a senior police officer told media. \u201cAfter installation in the city, FRT will likely be installed in other district headquarters,\u201d the officer added.
\n\u201cA facial recognition system uses biometrics to map facial features from a photograph or video,\u201d the officer said. \u201cIt compares the information with a database of known faces to find a match. Facial recognition can help verify a person\u2019s identity.\u201d
\n\u201cIn case a known over-ground worker steps out, the police personnel in control will be alerted once the name of the suspect emerges from the database,\u201d the officer said, adding the movement of the person under surveillance will be tracked and recorded.
\nPresently, besides human intelligence, CCTV cameras and drones are being used. The mobile bunkers of different security agencies operating in Srinagar are fitted with high-resolution cameras. These bunkers remain stationed at different locations in the city for the entire day.
\nPolice and CRPF have set up checkpoints in Srinagar at various places.
\nHuman rights activists believe that facial recognition technology violates the right to privacy and threatens the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression.
