ISLAMABAD : Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered federal government to appoint chairman ITNE till January 20. <\/p>\n
Petition filed by PFUJ on legal protection for Journalists and media workers came up for hearing before single bench of IHC presided over by Chief Justice (CJ) IHC Athar Minallah Wednesday. <\/p>\n
The court during the hearing of the case remarked such an important portfolio is lying vacant since long. Make appointment on this post and inform the court in this regard on next hearing. <\/p>\n
The court gave time to ministry of information and law to file reply in connection with matter of journalists rights till next hearing.<\/p>\n
The court summoned from federation copy of protection of journalists and media professional bill till January 20. Reporters had highlighted implementation of security wage board award and problems of journalists in the letter. <\/p>\n
The amicus curie Mazhar Abbas filed written submissions and registrar ITNE filed report in the court. <\/p>\n
The CJ IHC inquired what practice is in place in the world. How is independence of media and security of reporters. Editors should also be provided protection for the sake of independence of media. <\/p>\n
Hamid Mir told the court every country has different law. Policy has to be seen in line with country\u2019s laws. Photographers and camera man was excluded from the category of journalist in Journalist protection bill. Heavy penalties have been asked in the bill without defining fake news. <\/p>\n
The court remarked it is too violation of the constitution if the institution lays off the journalist on the basis that there is pressure on them. If press is not free then it is violation of article 19 of the constitution. Removing from job any one for the reason that his views are not liked by you too is violation of the constitution. <\/p>\n
Hamid Mir told the court legislation is needed in this respect. <\/p>\n
CJ IHC remarked there should be no clash of interest of media owners. There should be such a law which should cover these things. What is status of wage board award. What is its purpose. <\/p>\n
Hamid Mir told the court minimum salary of the journalists of news papers has been fixed in wage board award. <\/p>\n
The court remarked several cases have come before the court that appointment letter is not issued to them. <\/p>\n
Deputy Attorney General told the court the post of chairman ITNE is vacant since March. The post was advertised on December 19. This post is being made more effective with the induction of chairman. <\/p>\n
