\nThe Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) based weekly inflation surged 0.40 percent, registering the second increase in a row. According to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Friday, the SPI-based weekly inflation for the week ended on December 23, 2021 for the combined consumption group witnessed o.40 percent increase, while it went 19.83 percent up on a year-on-year (YoY) basis.
\nOn a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI increased across all quantiles ranging between 17.82 percent and 21.92 percent. Yearly inflation for the lowest income group increased by 21.92 percent while the highest income group recorded an increase of 19.83 percent.
\nAccording to the PBS, the combined index was at 168.83 on December 23, 2021 as compared to 168.16 on December 16, 2021 while the index was recorded at 140.89 a year ago on December 24, 2020. The SPI is computed on a weekly basis to assess the price movements of essential commodities at a shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country. The SPI comprises 51 essential items and the prices are being collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
\nDuring the week under review, out of 51 items, prices of 23 (45.09%) items increased, prices of 05 (9.80%) items decreased, and prices of 23 (45.09%) items remained stable.
\nThe SPI for the current week recorded an increase in the prices of food items including tomatoes (7.28%), eggs (2.95%), pulse Masoor (1.72%), and sugar (1.46%). An increase in prices of non-food items, including gents sponge chappal (20.08%), ladies sandal (16.69%), gents sandal (8.34%), LPG (5.03%) and georgette (1.00%), was observed with joint impact of (0.49%) into the overall SPI for combined group of (0.40%).
\nOn the other hand, a decrease was observed in the prices of potatoes (5.26%), chillies powdered (4.16%), onions (2.80%), gur (0.76%) and wheat flour (0.12%).
\nAccording to the PBS data, the year on year trend depicts an overall increase of 19.83% including electricity for Q1 (83.95%), LPG (71.18%), cooking oil 5-litre (59.93%), vegetable ghee 1-kg (56.77%), vegetable ghee 2.5-kg (54.70%), mustard oil (53.75%), gents sponge chappal (50.25%), gents sandal (44.49%), washing soap (44.39%), petrol (35.42%), pulse Masoor (34.35%), chillies powdered (26.75%) and diesel (26.72%), while major decrease observed in the prices of onions (25.15%), pulse Moong (24.56%), tomatoes (16.48%), eggs (10.03%), chicken (9.74%) and potatoes (7.98%).
\nThe weekly SPI percentage change by income groups showed that SPI across all quantiles increased ranging between 0.28 percent and 0.46 percent.
