\nJoe Root should step down as England Test captain following his side\u2019s series loss to the West Indies, former skipper Michael Vaughan told the BBC.
\nRoot\u2019s position is under the spotlight after a 1-0 series defeat which came on the back of a woeful 4-0 Ashes thrashing by Australia.
\nThat extended England\u2019s poor run to four successive Test series defeats.
\nThe 31-year-old Yorkshire star batter has skippered England in a record 64 Tests, winning 27 games \u2014 more than any other captain \u2014 but lost 26, which is also more than any other captain.
\nVaughan, who captained England 51 times from 2003-08, has known Root for many years but says it is better to have Root in the side without the burden of the captaincy.
\n\u201cHe\u2019s taken it as far as he possibly can,\u201d Vaughan told the BBC.
\n\u201cIf he rings me in the next week and asks for some advice I\u2019ll be dead honest \u2014 I\u2019d tell him to step down.
\n\u201cWill England be any worse off not having him as a captain? I don\u2019t think they would, because they are going to get his runs and a senior player.\u201d Vaughan said he would prefer it if Root, who has expressed his desire to remain captain, resigned rather than was fired by the future permanent director of cricket and the head coach.
\nFormer captain Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood are filling the roles of director of cricket and coach respectively following the departures of Ashley Giles and Chris Silverwood prior to the West Indies series.
\n\u201cI wouldn\u2019t want the new director of cricket or head coach to sack him \u2014 he\u2019s deserved the right to go on his own ground,\u201d said Vaughan. \u201cDuring his reign I don\u2019t think he has been helped at all.
\n\u201cHis first Ashes series there was the Ben Stokes incident (a late night fracas outside a Bristol bar), then we had the white-ball reset, then he\u2019s had Covid and it\u2019s been very difficult.
\n\u201cBut, I always think captains should pride themselves on maximising every ounce of potential in the changing room.
\n\u201cI just look at the team and ask \u2018Why did they perform so under their potential?\u2019 That would be a real concern for me.\u201d
\nVaughan says Root has lacked a clinical touch when it has come to matches that are delicately poised. \u201cTactically he has been poor,\u201d said Vaughan.
\n\u201cIt has been a common trend under Joe \u2014 he hasn\u2019t managed to grab a game.
\n\u201cIf he does carry on he\u2019ll really need someone who can drive the tactical side of the game with him.\u201d
\nRoot, however, has been adamant he wants to carry on as captain and is resolute in his belief that England are on the brink of a bright future. \u201cA difficult defeat to take because I really think there were a lot of positives to come from the way we played for the vast majority of this series,\u201d Root posted on his social media channels on Tuesday. \u201cAfter a long winter, it\u2019s time to take a break and recharge ahead of the summer, but I believe in the future of this team.\u201d
\nRoot did receive support from England\u2019s record wicket-taker James Anderson who, along with fellow opening bowler Stuart Broad, was controversially omitted from the West Indies tour. \u201cIf you get the right people in those two jobs above him then he can still do a really good job,\u201d Anderson said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
