German tennis great could be jailed for up to seven years after jury finds him guilty of four charges

\nFormer Wimbledon champion Boris Becker could be jailed for up to seven years after being found guilty of charges relating to his 2017 bankruptcy by a London court on Friday.
\nThe 54-year-old German was accused of hiding millions of pounds worth of assets, including two Wimbledon trophies, to avoid paying his debts.
\nBecker, who has lived in Britain since 2012, said he had co-operated with trustees trying to secure his assets, even offering his wedding ring, and relied on the advisers who managed his life away from tennis.
\nBecker told the court he earned a \u201cvast amount\u201d during his career, with the court hearing he won some $50 million in prize money and sponsorship deals.
\nBut Becker, who went on to coach current men\u2019s world number one Novak Djokovic for a spell, said his earnings \u201creduced dramatically\u201d following his retirement in 1999.
\nHe told Southwark Crown Court he was involved in an \u201cexpensive divorce\u201d from ex-wife Barbara Becker in 2001, which included high maintenance payments to their two sons.
\nBut a jury found him guilty of four charges, including removal of property, two counts of failing to disclose estate and concealing debt.
\nIt also acquitted him of a further 20 charges. Judge Deborah Taylor released the six-time Grand Slam singles champion on conditional bail ahead of sentencing on April 29, when he could face a jail sentence of up to seven years.
\nBecker did not respond to reporters\u2019 questions as he left the court.
\nFormer world number one Becker, who was supported in court by his partner Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro and eldest son Noah, said he was \u201cshocked\u201d and \u201cembarrassed\u201d when declared bankrupt on June 21, 2017 over an unpaid loan of more than \u00a33 million ($3.9 million) on his estate in Mallorca, Spain.
\nThe court was told Becker received 1.13 million euros (about \u00a3950,000) from the sale of a Mercedes car dealership he owned in Germany, which was paid into a business account used as his \u201cpiggy bank\u201d for personal expenses.
\nHe was found guilty of transferring hundreds of thousands of pounds to other accounts, including those of his ex-wife Barbara and estranged wife Sharlely \u201cLilly\u201d Becker, the mother of his fourth child.
\nBecker was also convicted of failing to declare a property in Germany, and hiding an 825,000-euro bank loan and shares in a tech firm.
\nA resident in Monte Carlo and Switzerland before moving to Britain, Becker said he had \u201cexpensive lifestyle commitments,\u201d including his \u00a322,000-a-month rented house in Wimbledon, south-west London.
\nHe also owed just under one million euros (more than \u00a3800,000) in liabilities over a conviction for tax evasion and attempted tax evasion in Germany in 2002. Becker was acquitted Friday of nine counts of failing to hand over trophies and medals from a glittering tennis career that yielded 49 singles titles in total.
\nHe told jurors he did not know the whereabouts of several pieces of silverware, including his first Wimbledon trophy, when Becker became the youngest winner of the men\u2019s singles title at the grass-court Grand Slam aged just 17 in 1985.
\nThat success, built on a powerful serve and volley game, proved the launchpad for a career where Becker won two more Wimbledon titles in 1986 and 1989, two Australian Opens (1991 and 1996) and the 1989 US Open.
\nHe also won the 1992 Olympic men\u2019s doubles gold medal with Michael Stich.
\nIn a country where Anglo-German relations were still dominated by memories of the Second World War, Becker\u2019s Wimbledon triumphs established him as a hugely popular figure with British sports fans \u2013 a position he cemented after his retirement when he became a BBC television commentator.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
