Despite Russia-Ukraine war, defence supplies from Moscow continue unabated

\nAmid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, India has received defence equipment for the training squadron of the Russia-made S-400 Triumf advanced surface-to-air missile defence system, local media reported on Friday.
\nIn December, India announced that Russia had begun deliveries of the S-400 long-range defense systems to India.
\nLocal news agency Asian News International (ANI) reported that the country received simulators and other equipment from Moscow.
\nThe report said that despite the war in Ukraine, \u201cdefense supplies from Moscow are continuing.\u201d The latest supplies from Russia also included \u201coverhauled fighter aircraft engines and spares for an aircraft fleet.\u201d
\n\u201cIt does not include missiles or launchers,\u201d the agency quoted defense sources as saying, adding that India also received the final parts of the S-400 system from Russia whose first squadron was \u201coperational to take care of threats\u201d from neighboring countries.
\nIndia, a long-time ally of Russia, has in recent times been growing closer to Washington. Since Russia launched a war on Ukraine in February, India has called for a peaceful solution but refrained from openly criticising Moscow.
\nSpecter of US sanctions
\nIn 2018, India and Russia signed a $5.5 billion contract for the S-400 system, putting India at risk of US sanctions.
\nThe US has long tried to deter countries from buying military equipment from Russia, threatening them with punitive measures under the Countering America\u2019s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
\nDespite Washington\u2019s warnings, New Delhi moved forward with the purchase, arguing that it has strategic connections with both Russia and the US.
\nTurkiye, another country that has gone forward with its own S-400 purchase, has dismissed the US sanctions threat and said the missiles are a matter of national security.
\nUS President Joe Biden\u2019s Coordinator for Sanctions Policy James O\u2019Brien told lawmakers in the House of Representatives last week that the US does not want India to buy the S-400 system from Russia, according to media reports.
