Says ban on luxury goods\u2019 imports to save $4bn; Saudi Arabia ready to invest $1bn resolve water crisis in Karachi

\nPrime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that he doesn\u2019t have a \u201cmagic wand\u201d to resolve all the problems of the country overnight, adding that the nation will have to work hard for progress.
\nAddressing a gathering of businessmen on Friday, the prime minister said that Pakistan cannot sustain imports of gas and petrol which cost the country $4 billion, saying the country needs to look for alternate sources.
\n\u201cThe objective of banning (import of luxury items) \u2013 for a specific time \u2013 is to save foreign exchange and bring stability. If we save $4 billion, this can meet our whole edible oil needs\u2026 This is like earning $4 billion,\u201d the prime minister said.
\nHe said the poor people living in Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or Balochistan, struggling for their bread to eat, medicine to treat illness and clothes to wear, would feel neglected to see the elite enjoying the imported luxury goods. However, this ban on the import of such items would address that social imbalance.
\n\u201cWe have become an importing economy but to prosper we have to become exporters and our government will incentivise the exporters by giving them easy loans,\u201d he added.
\nThe prime minister said that there is a gap of $45 billion between the country\u2019s exports and imports. \u201cEven If we add the remittances, the gap still remains above $15 billion.\u201d
\nHe told the gathering that in 2018, the dollar rate stood at Rs115 which jumped to Rs189 during three and half years of the previous government. \u201cWhen I took the oath, it (dollar) was at Rs189. This Rs 60-65 rise is not our fault,\u201d he remarked.
\nHe said having perceived the success of the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan, the previous government reduced the oil prices despite the country facing a huge debt burden. He said the ousted government neither provided relief to the common man in sugar, flour or edible oil, nor executed any agriculture or public welfare project with serious intention. He said with an 80% increase, the previous government obtained Rs22,000 billion in loans during its 3.5 years.
\nTalking about the problems of Karachi, the premier said that the port city\u2019s biggest problem is a shortage of water, adding that Saudi Arabia wants to invest $1 billion to resolve the chronic issue. \u201cI want all the stakeholders to come forward and give proposals including the government of Sindh, the MQM-P and the business community. In my opinion, we need to install desalination plants in Karachi and you will witness this problem be resolved in just a few years,\u201d he added.
\nRejecting a proposal by the business community to stop the supply of gas to domestic consumers, he said such a drastic measure will cause chaos in the country. \u201cThere should be a method to the madness… things can only be done slowly but if we implement it immediately, it will cause chaos,\u201d he added.
\n\u201cWe have to move towards solar and wind energy. You can make wind energy for only three or four cents per unit which used to be 18 cents just a few years ago.\u201d Saying that the nation needs to stand on its feet, PM Shehbaz said, \u201cFor how long we will continue to beg for our needs. Saudis are our brothers and they will not refuse [to help us out] but this begging cannot continue for long if we want to prosper.\u201d
\nHe said that there should be an IT tower in all the provinces of Pakistan, adding that IT exports alone have the potential to fetch $15 billion to the country. On this occasion, he also announced the removal of a 17 percent tax on solar technology imports.
\nSharif said during the previous government, he had proposed the signing of the Charter of Economy which was unfortunately laughed out. The prime minister also expressed the hope for the renewal of the GSP Plus status despite the fact that the previous government had criticised the European Union to serve the personal interest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
