\nThe biggest crisis that India is facing today is the \u201cpossible collapse of the nation\u201d, Nobel laureate and renowned economist Amartya Sen said.
\nSpeaking at the inauguration of Amartya Research Centre in Kolkata\u2019s Salt Lake area, Sen said that people should work towards maintaining unity and that divisions should not be made along religious lines.
\n\u201cI think if someone asks me if I\u2019m scared of something, I would say \u2018yes\u2019. There is a reason to be afraid now. The current situation in the country has become a cause for fear,\u201d the celebrated economist said.
\n\u201cI want the country to be united. I don\u2019t want division in a country that was historically liberal. We have to work together,\u201d he added. Sen further said, \u201cThe world came to know of Upanishads (philosophical-religious texts of Hinduism) because of a Muslim Prince.
\nDara Sikhoh, Shah Jahan\u2019s son, learnt Sanskrit and translated some of the Upanishads into Persian.\u201d
\nAsserting that India cannot belong only to the Hindus or to the Muslims, Sen stressed the need to stay united in line with the country\u2019s traditions.
\n\u201cIndia cannot be (a country) of Hindus only. Again, Muslims alone cannot make India. Everyone has to work together,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
