\nFormer Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice (retd) Nasirul Mulk was named caretaker prime minister on Monday.
\nThe announcement was made by Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah at a press conference in Islamabad following a meeting with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
\nKhursheed Shah announced that Justice (retd) Mulk will take reigns as caretaker premier while addressing a press conference along with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and National Assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.
\n\u201cWe have selected a candidate for caretaker premier who will prove to play a democratic role in the upcoming general election,\u201d the premier said while addressing the press conference.
\n\u201cEvery name was discussed, and this name was decided upon. It\u2019s a name no one can point fingers at,\u201d PM Abbasi added.
\nThe premier added, \u201cToday is a historic day for Pakistan and democracy.\u201d
\nAs PM Abbasi asked the leader of the opposition to announce the name of caretaker premier, Shah said, \u201cWe are happy that the government was able to complete its five-year term.\u201d
\nThanking the NA speaker for his \u201cmajor role\u201d in the government and opposition reaching an agreement, Shah added, \u201cIt was a challenge for all of us and all names that were put forth were credible and respectable individuals.\u201d
\n\u201cWe tried to make a decision which will be acceptable to the nation and Parliament,\u201d Shah further said.
\nThe veteran Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader said \u201cWe have made a democratic decision. I am thankful to the prime minister, to the speaker, for making this decision with patience, setting aside our emotions.\u201d \u201cNo one\u2019s name was discarded,\u201d he continued.
\n\u201cWe have chosen this name on the basis of merit. We took our parties into confidence and decided upon this name,\u201d the leader of the opposition in NA added.
\nShah said, \u201cThe name of the person I would like to present is a very respectable one.\u201d
\n\u201cThe name is Nasirul Mulk, who has served as chief justice. He played a historic role in the judiciary and when he was a lawyer,\u201d the PPP leader announced.
\n\u201cI am hopeful he will successfully conduct free, fair and impartial elections in Pakistan on July 25, 2018,\u201d Shah concluded.
\nThis was the sixth meeting between the two, with the previous five ending in a deadlock.
\nPakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman took to Twitter to congratulate the former chief justice moments after the decision was announced.
\n\u201cWant to congratulate Justice (r) Nasir ul Mulk on being appointed caretaker PM,\u201d Imran tweeted.
\nFurther, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said his party welcomes the decision of naming Justice (retd) Mulk as caretaker premier.
\n\u201cJustice (retd) Mulk has an advantage as he was the head of a judicial commission probing into rigging in 2013 general elections,\u201d Chaudhry said.
