\nPolice expressed resolve to stop aerial firing on the eve of Eid ul Fitr by sensitizing people through poster against the risks aerial firing as part of celebrations.
\nCapital City Police Officer (CCPO) Qazi Jamilur Rehman while talking to APP said here Thursday that aerial firing was a common practice for years in Pakistan including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Eid and New Year\u2019s night and at wedding ceremonies, adding that police have launched a special drive in the provincial capital to aware people about the risks attached with the aerial firing.
\nHe said a meeting in this connection was held and decided deployment of heavy police force on Chand Raat and would take prompt action against those involved in this menace. \u201cWe have also decided that an effective campaign against aerial firing in the province be launched to educate the public about the effects of this social evil. Senior police officers in the district have been asked to visit major mosques during Friday prayers to educate awareness.
\nThe meeting was attended by people from different walk of lives including journalist and members from the civil society. Qazi Jamilur Rehman emphasized to make an effective awareness campaign regarding this social evil.
\nHe urged Imams to sensitize the masses about the evil practice and its adverse effects including loss of precious lives due to this evil practice. Besides visiting mosques, KP Police also launched an awareness campaign that includes displaying of banners at various public places and posters on vehicles, meeting with community elders and making announcements from local radio stations, he said, adding, \u201cOur aim is to educate the citizens and save the precious lives.\u201d
\nPolice officer warned the public about the repercussions of violating the law, saying last year, three people were killed and 48 injured in various incidents of aerial firing across KP and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on Eid ul Fitr.
\nLast Friday he said he spoke to worshippers gathered at the local mosque for prayer and persuaded them to bring to an end to aerial firing. On this Friday a request will also be made to Imams of various prominent Masjid.
\n\u201cThe friendly attitude indicates our success, and we will witness a great decrease in aerial firing this Eid,\u201d he predicted.
\n\u201cWe have very clear orders from our higher-ups regarding aerial firing,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will take strict legal action against offenders\u201d. Similar campaigns have taken place in Mardan, Kohat, Swabi, Nowshera and other districts all across the province.
\nAerial firing is a public safety hazard, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police officer said, adding at least 25 people were injured in celebratory gunfire in Peshawar and 8 others in Mardan after Pakistan won the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy against India, he recalled.
\nHe said a walk in this connection will be starting from Anum Sanam square Gulbahar at 8.00 p.m on Friday and will end at Sir Syed Chowk with police officers and people from different walk of live, civil society, elders and journalists to participate.
\nHe said all those elements to be found involved in festive firing would spend Eid holidays in the jails as zero tolerance has been adopted against this menace.
\nHe disclosed that policewomen and cops in plain clothes have been asked to monitor the movement of unwanted elements and check aerial firing in different bazaars, cities and villages and immediately arrest them.
\nHe urged media men, academicians, local govt representatives, Ulema and people from civil societies to help them out in the awareness campaign against aerial firing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
