BEIJING
\nPakistan\u2019s Ambassador to China Moinul Haque on Saturday said that Islamabad firmly believes in the one-China principle and supports \u2018all efforts\u2019 of the neighbouring country in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
\nIn an interview with Global Times, the ambassador maintained that Pakistan will continue to extend full support to its \u2018iron brother\u2019 while responding to a question on US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s provocative visit to Taiwan and regarding China\u2019s countermeasures.
\n\u201cWithin the bounds of international law, every country has the right to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity,\u201d he said, adding that in the same vein, Pakistan supports all efforts of the Chinese government in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
\nHe also emphasised the importance of upholding the principles of the UN charter, international law and bilateral agreements. \u201cInter-state relations should be based on mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs,\u201d he said.
\nPelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday, defying a string of increasingly stark warnings and threats from China that have sent tensions between the world\u2019s two superpowers soaring.
\nThe visit is seen as a serious violation of the one-China principle. On Friday, the Chinese foreign ministry had announced eight countermeasures in response.
\nDuring the interview, the ambassador said that as \u2018iron brothers\u2019 and \u2018All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partners\u2019, Pakistan and China have always stood shoulder-to-shoulder with each other through many challenges.
\n\u201cPakistan would continue to extend full support to its iron brother China on the issues of its core national interest,\u201d he emphasised.
\nAccording to the ambassador, the current global geo-political situation remains tense as the world is already grappling with multi-faceted challenges.
\nHe furthered that the regional situation in Taiwan Straits was complicated with the visit. \u201cWe believe that the world cannot afford another crisis with far-reaching implications for regional and global peace and security,\u201d he said.
\nIt is pertinent to note that the \u2018one-China\u2019 policy outlines that there is only one China in the world and that the government of the People\u2019s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part.
\n\u201cThis is about China\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which needs to be respected,\u201d said Pakistan\u2019s envoy.
\nHe maintained that Pakistan opposes any attempt \u201cto create \u2018two Chinas\u2019 or \u2018one China, one Taiwan\u2019 or \u2018Taiwan independence\u2019.
