Artificial depreciation of Pak rupee major challenge to country: Dar
\nISLAMABAD
\nPakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ishaq Dar was sworn in as a Senator on Tuesday amid loud protests by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf\u2019s (PTI) upper house members.
\nThe PTI lawmakers surrounded the speaker\u2019s dais, chanted slogans calling Dar a \u2018thief\u2019 while also holding placards condemning the PML-N leader\u2019s oathtaking.
\nDar had been elected to the Senate from Punjab but could not take oath as he was not in the country since 2017.
\nAs he made his way to the Senate, in an informal conversation with the media Dar said \u201crupee\u2019s value has dropped artificially,\u201d admitting that the government faced a big challenge with inflation.
\n\u201cWe will try our best,\u201d he said, \u201cGod has blessed us in the past with success\u201d, expressing hope for the future making notes of the decline in debt and recent drop in the pressure on the local currency.
\n\u201cI love the people and the people love me,\u201d he added.
\nShortly after, under the chairmanship of Sadiq Sanjarani, the Senate session commenced where Dar was sworn in while the opposition shouted and sloganeered in protest.
\nFederal Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar while speaking on the occasion welcomed Dar to the Senate.
\n\u201cThe sanctity of the house should be borne into mind,\u201d said Tarar, adding that \u201ceveryone has skeletons in their closet\u201d.
\n\u201cYour reservations can be personal,\u201d he continued, \u201cbut not in accordance with the law and the Constitution\u201d.
\nOpposition Leader Shahzad Wasim said that \u201cthis system is protecting personalities\u201d and expressed his reservations that it was \u201cturning into one family\u2019s system\u201d.
\nAs Wasim spoke, senators from the government benches began sloganeering. Nonetheless, Wasim went on to add that Dar was \u201cyet to surrender to the court\u201d.
\n\u201cHe has simply entered the Senate,\u201d he exclaimed, \u201cis there any respect for the Senate or not?\u201d.
\nAfter the opposition recorded its protest, the proceedings progressed as per the agenda.
\nIt may be noted that PML-N leader Miftah Ismail officlaly stepped down from his post earlier in the day as Dar is all set to become the country\u2019s new finance czar.
\nDuring a huddle in London with the elder Sharif, party supremo Nawaz Sharif and PM Shehbaz had nominated Dar to be the new finance minister of the country.
\nThe two main targets given to Dar by PML-N supremo Nawaz are to bring down inflation and decrease the dollar-rupee parity, a source close to the Sharif family told the Express Tribune on the condition of anonymity.
