\nForeign Minister and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has declared that the flood disaster was not over yet as hill torrents from Balochistan mountains were still coming to Sindh.
\nAddressing a news conference at Sindh CM House in Karachi on Thursday, Bilawal Bhutto said about 50 percent of the flood-ravaged areas of Sindh has been dewatered.
\nHe was accompanied by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Sindh PPP President Senator Nisar Khuhro, Minister Information Sharjeel Memon, Minister Irrigation Jam Khan Shoro, Saeed Ghani, Murtaza Wahab, Advisor to CM Rasool Bux Chandio and others.
\nBilawal said although 50 percent of floodwater had been drained out from Sindh, still the water was coming down from the hills of Balochistan. \u201cLet me tell you it is not over yet, it is not over yet,\u201d Bilawal added.
\nHe said that the destruction caused by monsoon rains and floods was on such a large scale that it was nothing less than a doomsday for people of the affected areas. \u201cAs many as 30 million people have been affected by the natural calamity, and one-third of the country is still under water,\u201d Bilawal said, adding, \u201cCrops over millions of acres of land have been destroyed. Barring Karachi, the entire Sindh is under water.\u201d
\nHe said the country had now started experiencing the aftershocks of worst floods in its history as already there was a shortage of food items. \u201cPakistan has suffered the loss of $30 billion,\u201d he disclosed, and added that the government was still collecting details of the exact damage caused by the natural calamity, which will be more visible after the water recedes.
\nHe said that it was not a riverine flood, but it was the result of a heavy downpour that displaced a population of 33 million people \u2013 equivalent to the population of the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
\n \u201cNow, the stagnant water has started breaking out water-borne diseases, breeding mosquitoes and causing malaria, dengue, and such other issues,\u201d he said and added the floods have damaged 10 percent of our health facilities infrastructure; therefore, the required services have also been affected but even then 3.8 million people have been provided medical treatment through special medical camps.
\nNot only that, the FM went on to say, contagious diseases were spreading in the flood-hit areas. He said he was thankful to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for reaching out to the flood-affected people. \u201cFor the first time, I am feeling that today we have that person as our prime minister who is the prime minister of the entire country; and not of just one province,\u201d he said, and regretted that some people were still busy conspiring against the government.
\nResponding to a question, Bilawal said that some people were conspiring to form their government amid the natural calamity in the country. \u201cSome people want to divert attention from floods towards themselves, conspiring in a bid to form their government amid the crisis,\u201d Bilawal said without naming anyone.
\nHe called for a joint response to help the flood affectees and said that they should not be thinking about politics and votes. \u201cWe have to unite, prioritize humanity and set the politics aside,\u201d he added.
\nThe foreign minister said that the government was looking into the economic consequences of the floods as well as the food insecurity issue, while a second catastrophe, the health crisis also looms.
\nBilawal urged people to help as much as they can as the government still needs help for the rehabilitation of flood victims. \u201cWe have faced every hardship and emerged more powerful than ever. We will do the same this time as well by the will of Allah,\u201d he said.
\nAbout relief efforts, Bilawal said the government will continue to work hard for the provision of aid in terms of tents, trampolines, mosquito nets and rations. He said the rations provision is going well as the government departments, NGOs, international organisations and civil societies are working together for the cause. Bilawal said the second phase is reconstruction and rehabilitation.
\nCriticising the nations for greenhouse gas emissions, Bilawal assailed rich countries for causing damage to the entire world in form of climate change while making themselves richer. \u201cThe people of Pakistan are bearing the brunt of this damage and are paying in the form of their lives and livelihoods for the industrialization of other countries,\u201d he said and added \u201cWe don\u2019t seek alms but justice from the world.\u201d
\nThe foreign minister thanked UN Secretary-General Mr. Antonio Guterres for his visit to the flooded areas of Pakistan to witness the magnitude of the catastrophe.
\n\u201cHe visited the flooded areas, met with the people living in the camps, visited health facilities, and went to visit Mohenjo Daro, the World Heritage Site, that also been damaged by heavy downpours,\u201d Mr. Bhutto Zardari said and added that Mr. Guterres admitted that he has never seen such a huge catastrophe in his life.
\nHe appreciated the provincial government for convincing the World Bank to come over and help reconstruct the collapsed houses at a cost of Rs110 billion. \u201cThe provincial government has taken the lead in reaching the donor agency and convincing them for the solid support,\u201d he said.
\nThe chairman said that the issue of climate change needed to be addressed on an international level. \u201cOur contribution of carbon emission is hardly 0.8 percent, but we faced the catastrophe squarely.
\nBilawal Bhutto said that the Sindh government has done a commendable job by discharging the stagnant water speedily. \u201cBy end of November, we will be ready to cultivate the Rabi crop and Inshallah will help the small growers to reclaim their lands and make them fit for cultivation,\u201d he vowed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
