ISLAMABAD: Hours after an assassination attempt on PTI Chairman Imran Khan in Wazirabad, the interior ministry on Thursday asked the Punjab government to constitute a high-level joint investigation team (JIT) \u201cto bring facts to light\u201d.<\/p>\n
According to a statement, issued late on Thursday, the federal government has written to the Punjab government in this regard. The communique asked for senior police officers and intelligence personnel to be included in the JIT.<\/p>\n
Earlier, speaking at a press conference with Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said the JIT should consist of senior officers for \u201ccredible and transparent inquiry\u201d into the incident. He also assured the provincial government of the centre\u2019s \u201cfull assistance\u201d in the probe.<\/p>\n
The minister also blamed Punjab government for the security lapse that may have led to the firing. He placed the responsibility for the leaked video of the assailant\u2019s confession on the provincial government\u2019s shoulders as well.<\/p>\n
He criticised PTI leaders Asad Umar and Shireen Mazari for blaming top government and military officials for the incident, without any proof or evidence.<\/p>\n
Censuring PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry for allegedly inciting people to attack the houses of opposition leaders, Mr Sanaullah said, \u201cYou too do not live in the skies. If you foment violence, the blaze you ignite will also engulf you.\u201d<\/p>\n
While confirming threats to the PTI chairman\u2019s life, the minister added foolproof security arrangements were made for his protection. He also advised the PTI chief to change his course of action in the wake of the incident.<\/p>\n
He said on directions of the prime minister, he has sought a report from the Punjab government, chief secretary and inspector general of police.<\/p>\n
Ms Aurangzeb advised the media and people to avoid speculations and refrain from irresponsible statements. She strongly condemned the firing and wished a swift recovery to Mr Khan and other PTI leaders.<\/p>\n
Ms Aurangzeb said the suspect has been arrested and his statement was recorded at a police station in Gujrat.<\/p>\n
The minister also appealed the masses to not \u201cpoliticise the incident\u201d and make \u201cirresponsible comments\u201d as such statements might lead to an untoward incident.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
