Islamabad(PR): A media conference was held and field visit was conducted at \u201cNational Sugar and Tropical Horticulture Research Institute\u201d (NSTHRI), PARC, Makli, Thatta by PARC under the Advocacy and Projection of PARC R&D Activities to the Stakeholders and in electronic and Print Media under the supervision of Director General SAARC, Karachi. During the said event, Dr.ABDUL FATAH SOOMRO Director NSTHRI, PARC Thatta and Director General Public Relations & Protocol \/ PI Advocacy Project, PARC were also present on the occasion.
\nThe main objectives of National Sugar and Tropical Horticulture Research Institute (NSTHRI), PARC, Makli Thatta were highlighted during the Conference by the Speakers. They that NSTHRI is working to develop high yielding sugarcane varieties with best sugar recovery and having significant performance in different agro-ecological zones of the country\u201d. To achieve the goal, the institute has been working on development of new sugarcane varieties through local and exotic fuzz (true seed of sugarcane) since 1990. Dr.ABDUL FATAH SOOMRO Director NSTHRI, PARC Thatta highlighted the following achievements of the institute are as under:
\nHe said Evaluation and selection of new sugarcane genotypes for variety development is a continuous process at NSTHRI, Thatta. Every year, more than 5000 new sugarcane clones\/genotypes are developed through local and exotic fuzz. Testing of these sugarcane genotypes is being made in different evaluation and selection experiments at the Farm.
\nThatta-10, Thatta-2109 and Thatta-326 sugarcane commercial varieties, while, Thatta-300, sugarcane variety of the institute are at final stage of approval process with Provincial Seed Council, Sindh. The other two up-coming varieties of the institute i.e. Thatta-910 and Thatta-1312 are possessing quite attracting features, which have also been finalized through all varietal selection stages and now are in NUVYT study.
\nMoreover, Under Pak-China Cooperation project, the institute worked on 07 Chinese sugarcane varieties, out of these, 2 varieties i.e. YT-53 and YT-55 proved to be best. The proposal for YT-55 sugarcane variety has been submitted to Variety Evaluation Committee (VEC), PARC, Islamabad for approval.
\nHe also stated that NSTHRI, Thatta has also mandate to conduct research on horticultural, cereals and oils seed crops for their profitable production in coastal areas. Mother plants of different fruits viz. ber, chikoo, falsa, papaya, casheu nuts, pomegranate, injeer and saroo have been planted on soil raised beds under drip irrigation system at NSTHRI, office research site.
\nLater on they visited various facilities of the institute.. The media group was very much impressed and took keen interest in PARC\u2019s NSTHRI, Thatta interventions. They also showed their interest to visit other PARC research components to witness other research activities and new innovations, developed under PARC system, for their dissemination through media among stakeholders for their awareness and adoption to increase productivity of agriculture sector in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
