\nPeru has declared Mexico\u2019s ambassador to Lima a \u201cpersona non grata\u201d and ordered him to leave the country in 72 hours, Peru\u2019s foreign minister has announced.
\nThe abrupt order came on Tuesday after Mexican ambassador Pablo Monroy announced that his country had granted asylum to the family of Pedro Castillo, who was removed as Peruvian president earlier this month.
\nCastillo is facing rebellion charges from behind bars after attempting what critics have labelled a coup on December 7.
\nThe ejection of Monroy was due to \u201crepeated statements from the highest authorities of that country regarding the political situation in Peru,\u201d according to Peru\u2019s foreign ministry\u2019s post on social media.
\nMexico\u2019s foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Twitter the expulsion was \u201cunjustified and reprehensible\u201d. Ebrard said the government was negotiating safe passage for Castillo\u2019s family who were inside their embassy in Lima.
\nLast week, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador sharply criticised the removal of Castillo as undemocratic, stressing that he continues to recognise Castillo as Peru\u2019s lawful leader.
\nPeru\u2019s foreign minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi said the safe passage for Castillo\u2019s wife and the couple\u2019s two children had been formally approved. But neither of the governments offered a timeline for when Castillo\u2019s wife, Lilia Paredes, or their children, will travel to Mexico.<\/p>\n
\u2018Undemocratic harassment\u2019
\nArgentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Mexico issued a joint statement last week declaring Castillo the victim of \u201cundemocratic harassment\u201d.
\nNewly appointed President Dina Boluarte, who served as vice president under Castillo\u2019s government, summoned Peru\u2019s ambassadors back home for consultations days later, citing unacceptable interference in the country\u2019s internal affairs.
\nAlso on Tuesday, Peruvian legislators approved proposed early elections, with 93 in favour and only 30 opposed, bringing them two years ahead of elections currently scheduled for 2026.
\nAfter Castillo attempted to dissolve the Congress and rule by decree on December 7, the legislators removed him from office. He tried to flee to the Mexican embassy but was detained on his way there by the police.
\nHis removal \u2013 and subsequent arrest and detention on allegations of \u201cconspiracy\u201d and \u201crebellion\u201d \u2013 have sparked widespread protests and spurred Boluarte\u2019s administration to declare a nationwide state of emergency for 30 days.
\nPeru\u2019s court also struck down a request from prosecutors to ban Paredes from leaving the country on Tuesday as she is under investigation for alleged involvement in a money laundering network that could also implicate Castillo.
\n\u201cMexico is sheltering the corrupt,\u201d Peruvian opposition legislator Maria del Carmen Alva told journalists on Tuesday.
\nBut Mexico\u2019s Lopez Obrador said while his government prioritises non-intervention in other nations\u2019 domestic affairs, he has diverted from that principle when it comes to perceived ideological allies in Latin America.
\nCastillo will remain locked up in pretrial detention for 18 months after a judicial panel approved prosecutors\u2019 request for the extension while they investigate the rebellion and conspiracy charges against the former rural teacher who won a close election last year running under the banner of the Marxist Free Peru Party.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
