\nTurkiye\u2019s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Cristiano Ronaldo was subjected to a \u201cpolitical ban\u201d at the World Cup, as he compared the Portuguese footballer to Lionel Messi.
\n\u201cThey have wasted Ronaldo. Unfortunately, they have imposed a political ban on him,\u201d Erdogan said on Sunday while speaking at a youth event in the eastern Erzurum province.
\nCristiano Ronaldo\u2019s World Cup dream was over this year as Portugal succumed to a Quarter Final defeat at the hands of Morrocco, while Ronaldo himself was benched at the start of both Round of 16 and Quarter Final fixtures.
\n\u201cSending a footballer like Ronaldo to the pitch with just 30 minutes remaining to the match ruined his psychology and took away his energy,\u201d Erdogan said.
\n\u201cRonaldo is someone who stands for the Palestinian cause,\u201d he added.
\nRonaldo has never issued any public statements on the Israel-Palestine conflict, despite false reports and doctored photos emerging periodically online.
\nA widely-circulated story that Ronaldo had donated 1.5m euros ($1.59m) to Palestinians after he auctioned off a golden boot award was denied in 2019 by a sports management company representing the footballer.
\nAn image of Ronaldo holding a sign saying \u201cTogether with the Palestinians\u201d in Spanish that was widely shared online was also doctored and was in fact an expression of support for the victims of an earthquake in Spain in 2011.
