\nPakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan revealed that General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa had \u201csent two brigadiers\u201d in the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in the Panama Papers case that ultimately led to the disqualification of then premier Nawaz Sharif.
\nSpeaking in an interview on a private channel, Imran reiterated his stance that Bajwa \u2018changed\u2019 after he was granted an extension in his tenure in 2019.
\n\u201cGeneral (retd) Bajwa used to pressure me to focus my energy on the economy and forget about accountability,\u201d said Imran stressing that \u201cbefore the extension, he used to sit journalists down and tell them how much corruption they [political leaders] have been involved in\u201d and later the same leaders were \u201cbrought into power\u201d.
\n\u201cIn their JIT, Gen (retd) Bajwa had sent two brigadiers that later proved Nawaz Sharif\u2019s Panama case,\u201d he said adding that this was the reason that \u201cto this date, Nawaz Sharif refuses to forgive Bajwa\u201d.
\nNevertheless, Imran defended his past decision to rely on the \u201cdeep state\u201d when he was in government.
\n\u201cEstablishment is a reality in this country, it is the single intact and organised institution at the moment. If you do anything through the army, it gets done,\u201d he said.
\nCounting the \u201cpositives\u201d, Imran said that when it came to the management of the coronavirus pandemic among other health and natural crises \u201cthey were able to do things the bureaucracy and health department could not\u201d.
\n\u201cBut the negative is that if they decide against something then it cannot be done. There is no accountability and no rule of law then,\u201d he added.
\nImran\u2019s statement comes two days after Nawaz had held ex-army chief and former director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) General Faiz Hameed responsible for the current state of affairs in the country. \u201cThey have spun Pakistan around themselves and have played a disgusting joke on the country,\u201d he had said. It may also be noted that the PML-N supremo has in the past also alleged that the JIT was biased against him.
\nReflecting on the Sindh local body elections, Imran conceded that the PTI\u2019s local organisations \u201cdid not perform as they should have such that it could win despite electoral rigging\u201d. The PTI chief said that while there had been \u201cwidespread rigging\u201d in the Punjab by-elections last year, \u201cpeople came out in such a fashion that we still emerged victorious\u201d.
