\nA Conservative member of the UK\u2019s House of Lords, who was criticised for his \u201cracially charged\u201d comments over BBC\u2019s documentary on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, apologised and withdrew his remarks, The Guardian reported.
\nRami Ranger wrote a letter to the BBC regarding the documentary on Modi and asked \u201cPakistani-origin staff were behind this nonsense\u201d.
\nWhen approached by The Guardian, Ranger said: \u201cSince you are judge and jury, please go ahead and write to damage me more.\u201d He also said that the British Pakistanis had made \u201cinflammatory and unnecessary\u201d criticisms of Modi.
\nRanger heavily criticised the two-part documentary about Modi\u2019s role in the 2002 religious riots.
\n\u201cWe are a very hard-working community, we are not in prison as much as the Pakistani community, we do not do grooming of young girls, we do not do drug pedalling,\u201d the Tory peer told India Today.
\nThe Tory leader, further criticising the British Pakistanis, said that \u201c30-40 Labour MPs who depend on Pakistani votes\u201d and that \u201cPakistani votes are the best because they are in ghettos\u201d.
\nRanger withdrew his comments later, admitting that they had \u201ccaused offence\u201d.
\nCalling his remarks an overreaction in the heat of the moment, Ranger said that they do not reflect his perception of the British Pakistani community.
\n\u201cI withdraw the comments completely,\u201d said Ranger when connected about the interview.
\nLabour\u2019s chair Anneliese Dodds termed Ranger\u2019s comments as \u201coffensive and racist\u201d. She urged the Lord\u2019s commissioners to probe whether the Tory leader had broken the conduct rules as she suspected a \u201cbreach\u201d.
\nMeanwhile, the party\u2019s vice-chair said it was \u201cshocking that any parliamentarian held such offensive views\u201d.
